Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Police state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.

A senior representative stated the incident made him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
